HHistory Lifeboat Class Valentijn (KNRM)
In the year 1990 Dutch Lifeboat organization KNZHRM commissioned lifeboat Valentijn in Noordwijk aan Zee. This was the first RIB based lifeboat for service on beaches. Until 1990 beach based lifeboats in The Netherlands where mostly based on 1930s designs, sometimes even launched from the beach with actual horse power.
Also during 1990, both Dutch lifeboat organizations KNZHRM & KZHRMS merged to KNRM (the Dutch RNLI equivalent). Lifeboat Valentijn entered KNRM service, and proofed very successful. Follow-up orders where placed.
After 10 years, an improved version came in service: Valentijn 2000. Until today, Valentijn class exists of 18 lifeboats. The newest ship replaced the class name-giver Valentijn, which moved to a museum in 2016.
This class of very fast RIB based lifeboats became so successful, it’s also exported to other countries. The Italian Guardia Costiera does have the largest non-Dutch fleet of this class. Also, Norfolk’s Caister-on-Sea lifeboat is from the Valentijn class.
