Ferry Oost-Vlieland, Scale 1/1250, 3,84 cm length
New built Doeksen ferry Friesland (1956) was followed by 1962 new built ferry Oost-Vlieland, for service to the island of Vlieland instead of Terschelling. The new ferry was named after Vlieland’s main village Oost-Vlieland. Our BFT1250.nl Oost-Vlieland in 1/1250 scale makes a great combination with our Friesland ship model.
History ferry Oost-Vlieland
Until the start of the 1960s there was no direct ferry service to the Frisian island Vlieland. Passengers with Vlieland as destination had to use the ferry from Harlingen to Terschelling and change over to a smaller ferry near Vlieland (at Vlieree estuary). With the new built ferry Oost-Vlieland it was possible for the first time to maintain a direct service from Harlingen to Vlieland.
During the extreme winter of 1963 the Waddenzee between Harlingen and Vlieland was completely frozen. Because Doeksen was unable to reach Harlingen, the ferry service had to be changed. The North Sea was still accessible, so the service was changed to Den Helder (80 km distance), and when the port of Den Helder was closed, IJmuiden (130 km distance) was chosen as destination. By the end of the 1980s Oost-Vlieland was rendered redundant in Doeksen’s fleet. In the 20 years that followed, the ferry was as inland cruise ship. An initiative to exploit the ferry for day trip cruises from Terschelling failed, the ferry was sold to the United Nations in Liberia, where the ferry sunk in 2008.
